DIRECTORS NOTE
With my debut film Behind the Glass, I wanted to tell a touching mother-daughter story – a dynamic that, in my opinion, is far too rarely the focus of filmmaking. As the daughter of a single mother, I understand the challenges that arise for both the mother and the child. My own life served as inspiration: emigrating twice, starting anew in foreign countries, and witnessing my mother’s balancing act between her role as a parent and her own personal needs.
The film is not autobiographical, but it contains many elements that are familiar to me. It’s about trust and communication – the ability to talk to each other and truly listen. I especially wanted to show how the relationship between mother and daughter can evolve: from a clear hierarchy to a meeting of equals. It’s a process where both learn to respect each other as adults.
The greatest challenge in making this film was developing patience – a skill that is particularly crucial in the film industry. The writing process was especially demanding, as writing often means rewriting: constantly creating new versions, discussing, discarding, and starting over. It’s a lonely and lengthy process that requires perseverance.
What makes this debut special is its authenticity. It was important to me that the characters feel believable and human – complex figures who are not simply good or bad, but real. This vision began with writing dialogues that sound natural and vivid and continued into casting, where I specifically looked for actors who could embody this authenticity. This realism, this genuineness, was a central part of my vision.
My ultimate goal is to move the audience. I want viewers to immerse themselves in the story and fully engage with their emotions. If my film reaches people emotionally, if it inspires them to reflect on their own relationships, then I have achieved my goal.
